how to CarryOn in Beijing,

Beijing is the capital of the world’s most populous country and the political, educational and cultural epicenter of China, rich in history and steeped in tradition. The 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics brought along a massive overhaul that resulted in improved transport, a media blitz and inevitably a plethora of Beijing hotel deals.

The Opposite House Beijing was born in the days leading up to the 2008 games and is one of the most intriguing luxury boutiques you’ll find. Located in the heart of Sanlitun district, this hotel deal is steps away from lively shopping and nightlife.

Beijing, like many of its global counterparts, is a city of contrasts meshing ancient appeal with cosmopolitan grandeur. In the heart of the city lies the famed Forbidden City, the sprawling palace complex of past emperors that is now one of the world’s best museums. It’s also a geographical oddity with all other major Beijing sites, aside from the Great Wall, within a two mile radius.

Directly opposite the Forbidden City is the Emperor Hotel where you can not only find amazing hotel deals if you look closely, but the rooftop bar, Yin is a tourist draw. This bar offers the best views of Beijing and some potent cocktails.

For the shopaholic, the hutong, or ancient alleyway, of Nanluoguxiang is lined with miles of shops, galleries and cafes that skew both kitsch and trendy. It’s a must-see stop but, like anywhere else in the city, be prepared to haggle. Don’t be afraid to threaten to walk away because it’s the fastest way to get a lowered price.

One of the city’s most legendary landmarks is of course Tiananmen Square, the world’s largest public square surrounded by grand buildings like the Museum of Chinese History. It’s also the site of the notorious massacre of student activists by the People’s Liberation Army in 1989.

The Great Wall of China is about an hour away from the city and be prepared to face huge crowds as this is a very popular site. A taxi ride is typically a great way to avoid the crowds and get a view of the Great Wall of Tourists.

Now let’s talk food, because Chinese take-away doesn’t quite do real Chinese food justice. Beijing is known primarily for its roast duck. Da Dong Roast Duck Restaurant is located southwest of the Dongsi Shitiao Bridge and serves up the best Peking ducks in town. For great food at low prices, following the locals instead of the tourists is a good plan. Street food provides some of the most delicious ways to get a taste of China. Savory pancakes are a fan favorite any time of day and in the winter months, candied haw berries are a great treat. Guijie is one of the best streets for food in Beijing and a foodie’s paradise.

A Beijing vacation is filled with discovery, appreciation for an ancient culture and some of the best food this side of creation. The entire family is sure to have a great time.
