how to CarryOn in Cozumel,

Cozumel is one of the premier diving locations in the world. Shallow reefs, luxurious beaches and clear turquoise waters coax many a water-lover, but Cozumel, Mexico is so much more than just diving; land-lovers can find amazing vacation memories and hotel deals.

Cozumel years ago was Mexico’s big secret known mainly to scuba divers but today, the secret’s out. A string of amazing hotels line the Yucatan shores and the tourist zone is full of great deals and diversions. A great hotel that gets you close enough to the action without invading that vacation mood is the Fiesta Americana Cozumel – All Inclusive. Overlooking the Caribbean with romantic views, this family-friendly hotel has everything you are looking for in a beach hotel.

Diving and snorkeling are the main attraction to Mexico’s largest island but it is also a huge cruise ship hub. Every year the island averages 600 cruisers to its shores who enjoy a hedonistic mix of restaurants, hotels and shops.

In February, visitors can enjoy the festive Carnaval that brings the streets to life with colorfully dressed dancers and traditional food and wares for sale. Cozumel is also the ancient cradle of Mayan goddess of love and fertility, Ixchel, which makes for quite the romantic vacation spot!

For the water lovers, the Palancer Reef is the second largest in the world and Jacques Cousteu himself declared it one of the best skin diving locales in the world. Divers have a lot to explore on the ocean floor because in the 17th and 18th centuries, Cozumel was a known hideout for pirates who would ambush cargo ships coming off the island’s shores.

A great family excursion is exploring the San Gervasio Ruins where tourists can get a glimpse of ancient Mayan remains or, for the active family,  take a hike through beautiful Punta Sur Ecological Park.

Meals on this island are mostly going to be seafood and familiar Mexican fare. Lobster dishes are not only popular but very affordable across the island. Downtown San Miguel is full of amazing seafood, Mexican and international restaurants and is a great tourist spot for shopping and entertainment as well. Kinta, a local Mexican restaurant is a tourist favorite.

The beaches of Cozumel are unrivaled but keep a few things in mind when beach bumming. For starters, Cozumel is conservative so topless or nude sunbathing is not advised. You’ve heard the rhetoric, “Don’t drink the water in Mexico,” well in Cozumel, really- don’t. Bottled water is the preferred option. And lastly mind your feet! Cozumel beaches are gorgeous but rocks hidden in the sands and the coral reef can ruin a perfectly good day if they knick your feet.

With those tips in mind and you hotel deal booked early, enjoy the magic of the Yucatan Peninsula.
