how to CarryOn in San Francisco

San Francisco, California is one of Northern California's most mellow yet exciting places. Maybe it’s the weather or the great hotel deals that put smiles on the faces of nearly everyone you run across in this 7-square-mile city.

Or maybe it’s the chocolate.

how to CarryOn in San Francisco, CA

San Francisco, California is one of Northern California's most mellow yet exciting places. Maybe it’s the weather or the great hotel deals that put smiles on the faces of nearly everyone you run across in this 7-square-mile city.

Or maybe it’s the chocolate. Ghirardelli Square is the original home of the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company and is now a landmark of shops and restaurants in Fisherman’s Wharf. Chocolate generally makes people happy so it fits that it’s a contributing factor to the buoyancy of the city. Fairmont Heritage Place Ghirardelli Square offers amazing hotel deals that put you in an exciting part of town and close to the chocolates.

Fisherman’s Wharf is home to the famed Pier 39, Cannery Shopping Center, and countless restaurants and stands serving mainly fresh seafood. Many San Francisco events like the world-renowned 4th of July fireworks display take place here. Beware the Bushman, Fisherman’s Wharf’s local street performer who for 30 years has sat behind branches, scaring passers-by.

The historic trolley cars are great postcard photo-ops. For a $2 deal, hop on a trolley on the Embarcadero and ride it all the way to the famous Castro neighborhood. The Castro started off as a place for discharged gay WWII servicemen and has seen a few reincarnations as Little Scandinavia and an Irish neighborhood and once again a gay neighborhood during the Gay Pride movement of the 60s.

Counter-culture was born in the Haight neighborhood and though some remnants of the hippie culture are still prevalent in the Haight-Ashbury area, it’s also a place where rich yuppies inhabit the Victorian homes and set up posh boutiques and hip restaurants.

Take a quick trip to see San Francisco’s “crookedest” street, Lombard Street which is famous for having a steep, one-block section of eight tight hairpin turns.

Grab dinner in the world-famous Chinatown after shopping for trinkets and cheap Pashminas. After dinner, a quick trip to nearby Little Italy for Italian espresso and biscotti is a must. For an artsy outing, visit the Mission neighborhood for hand painted murals.

For a rustic side of the city, the Presidio is riddled with eucalyptus trees and lush lawns. Take all that in at the Presidio Social Club while sipping on cocktails and grabbing a relaxed bite. Not too far from the Presidio is the emblematic Golden Gate Bridge. An engineering phenomenon, the bridge is a beautiful walk or jog marred occasionally by the many who jump off its precipice each year.

The Embarcadero is the home of the Ferry Building at the foot of Market Street which hosts some of the best shopping and a farmer’s market on Tuesday and Saturday.

Other cool sites are Napa Valley, Sonoma Valley, the famed Alcatraz prison with its eerily realistic audio tour, Stanford University and the high-tech companies of Palo Alto including Facebook, Pinterest, Google and Apple corporate offices.
