how to CarryOn in Savannah, GA

When you think of southern belles with that charming southern drawl and sprawling mansions, there’s no place like Savannah, Georgia. The allure of Savannah lies not only in the meandering Historic District’s lush squares, but in its southern hospitality. The best hotel deals are sweetened by that disarming southern charm.

A charming example of Savannah hospitality is the romantic Eliza Thompson House hotel in downtown Savannah. The exquisite little bed and breakfast is located in the heart of the pedestrian-friendly historic district and is a great Savannah hotel deal in a covetous location.

Known as “the most haunted city in the U.S.” or at least one of them, Savannah is not without its eerie ghost stories and fables. The Mercer Williams House was the setting of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil along with the famous Bonaventure Cemetery, characterized by huge oaks draped in Spanish moss.

Perhaps one of the most popular Savannah attractions is River Street which runs alongside the Savannah River in the Waterfront District. This picturesque, cobblestone-street is lined with souvenir shops, cafes and seafood restaurants and is perfect for an afternoon stroll. When the sun goes down, River Street becomes a lively party scene that may not be as family-friendly as in the daytime.

Chippewa Square is at the center of the downtown historic district and is also the place where the unforgettable Forest Gump bus-stop bench scenes were shot. Unfortunately the bench from the movie has since been relocated to the Savannah History museum.

Tybee Island makes for a fun beach day trip and City Market is known for its independently-owned galleries, unique shops and sidewalk cafes.

Elegant mansions decorate the Savannah landscape that have been preserved and have intricate designs that make them stand out.

Forsyth Park is another great place to take a lazy stroll and here you are bound to meet some of Savannah’s characteristically friendly residents who don’t have to know you to ask, “How y’all doing?” And this translates to the customer service you’ll get everywhere.

Mrs. Wilkes’ Dining Room is a great place to stop over for lunch or dinner and serves up some of the best “down-home Southern cooking” in the city. From mashed potatoes and gravy to mac and cheese, candied yams and fried chicken, you have plenty to choose from.

Savannah is that archetypal southern city that promises slow days of easy sightseeing and great, cozy hotel deals.
